Abstract

|
The author of this article conducted research on the key points of interpretation techniques in psychoanalysis, which are discussed in several sections under the following subtitles: 1) What is interpretation and what one interprets; 2) How to interpret; 3) The relationship between interpretations and the emotions that occur following the interpretations; 4) Why transference interpretation is important; 5) The disadvantages of interpretation; and 6) Techniques for using the analyst¡¯s thoughts and emotions in interpretation. Points that need to be emphasized are that interpretation is a process in which the analyst (with the analyst¡¯s understanding of the patient) relates and connects the psychic phenomena of the patient, which were previously unknown to him/her; that interpretation is most effective when used on information that the patient comprehends, or used when the patient is preconscious in telling information that was unconsciously told before; and that it is very effective when interpretation brings forth emotion on behalf of the patient. However, it should be noted that depending on the circumstances, there may be disadvantages in using interpretation that limits expression of emotion. Lastly, it is significant that application of the analyst¡¯s thoughts and feelings in interpretation should be used very cautiously.
